The recital opens with Mendelssohn’s Fantasy Op16/3 - a gentle reminiscence of Wales where he spent the summer in 1892 - and leads to Beethoven’s emotional and breathtaking Sonata op. 13 “Pathétique”, one of his most famous compositions.

Beethoven met Rossini in Vienna. He praised him as a talented and melodious composer, and respected him for his creative powers, being able to compose many operas in such a short time. Later, Rossini crowned his hugely successful operatic career.

In his final years in Paris (1857-68) he became renowned for the celebrated Saturday Soirees. For these he wrote numerous short piano pieces, for example: ‘Memento homo’, ‘Un Profond Sommeil’, ‘Specimen de Mon temps’.
